So, good ole MLK Day is approaching...which means Negro month is right around the corner. The MLK Parade will be held on Monday, January 18th on….Martin Luther King Blvd. Besides the fact that I got called into work; I was still apprehensive about going. Don’t get me wrong; I love my people, but I never really liked this time of year. My people have contributed so much to the existence of human beings, but we only celebrate ONE person and celebrate our accomplishments ONCE a year. No, I’m not saying that I want our people to be ass kissed at every second…but this just seems insincere. It’s kind of like…”yea we killed the face of the Civil Rights movement, so here’s a day so you all can shut up”. Now maybe I’m being pessimistic, but I just feel MLK Day is a way of saying if you want to be truly free in this country; be peaceful like this man…and we will still probably kill you anyway. Not to be rude, but it’s so many other people who contributed to the Civil Rights movement (not to take anything away from the efforts of King). It’s like we can’t publicly acknowledge anyone else’s efforts because it wasn’t as peaceful as King’s. America will never have a Malcolm X day because of his radical ideals. There’s no real way to be free as a black person in America regardless of the approach. I will celebrate MLK Day in my own way, but if any of you go to the parade; please comment and let me know how it goes.
