5 Things You Need to Know When Traveling to an Island

Alright, this was my first time traveling to an island. I went to Puerto Rico for 6 days and boy did I learn a lot in those 6 days. I made many mistakes so I’m going to try to help y’all out with the following steps:1. BRING CASH: I know I annoyed the hell out of my group because I had to stop at an ATM every single time we went somewhere. Paying for taxis, food, drinks, activities, etc. with a large group is just way easier with cash involved. Then sometimes your card won't work depending on the debit/credit option...so just bring cash. 2. BRING SUNSCREEN: Being a black woman, I like to think that I don’t need sunscreen because my skin absorbs the sun. WRONG! Boy was I soooo wrong on this one. Not only does sunscreen protect you from cancer (yes, black people can get skin cancer), but it also helps prevent sun burn. I figured since I’ve never been sun burned, I wouldn’t get sun burned.  Wrong, again. I was burned on my nose, cheeks, shoulders, chest, and toes. It’s not fun. My skin was not ready at all. I now have to walk around looking like reptile for a few weeks. 3. Listen to the locals: Our taxi driver was THE BEST tour guide. Do not listen to the hotel employees, listen to the people in the community. Our driver, Carlos, told us about the best/worst places to eat, the best prices for activities, when we were getting taxed, etc. For example, look at the “chicken wings” they served me. The waiter tried to tell me that in Puerto Rico it's usually 9 people in a household so they ration the chicken down to tiny pieces. I asked my driver about and he just laughed. I was pissed when this plate of "chicken wings" was sat in front of me.

4. Make an itinerary & include the prices: We had a whole bunch of cool things lined up for us to do, but during the trip we found out that some activities costed way more than our budgets. Always make 2-3 options for the day as well. If someone is hung over from the night before, maybe they don’t want to spend a day hiking. 5. Have fun: Kanye put it best, “How you going to be mad on vacation?” You are on vacation so act like it. Leave all of your worries at home...trust me they will be waiting for you at da do’ when you get back. Besides, you never want to bring the morale of the group down. I know things pop up (I was definitely guilty of this), but shed a few thug tears and get back in there! I feel like this is a good place to start; you all can handle the rest! I feel like it’s perfect timing because you all probably just finished booking your vacations with your tax money so I hope this helps!
