Because, Representation Truly Matters
There has been a significant increase in Our people turning to the arts; film, painting, writing, photography and videography expressing ourselves, creating our own media; accurately, in a world where "controlled media" manipulates biased versions they choose to show. Today, we now have exceptional Black television like Atlanta, Insecure, Queen Sugar, and Blackish that provides spot on representations of Our communities. Uncle Buck, another Black television show true to who we are, was canceled after only one season. Major examples as to why we must support Our own. An offspring of this booming artistic era is little Miss Anuli. Vlogger, master DIY-er, creator, and carefree Black girl full of magic. After being completely inspired by Beyonce's Lemonade, she created a 2 1/2 minute short film of her own. While watching her short film, Obsessed, EYE WAS OBSESSED. I watched it back to back to back. I mean, I genuinely felt and still feel, that THIS needs to go viral. I thought to myself how so many videos and pics that have absolutely no depth, meaning, or purpose go viral everyday, but THIS Black creation full of thought, emotion, and art needs to be seen by many. The poetry is so beautifully written it could stand alone.
It matters what we post, repost, tweet, retweet, and whatever else we place on our social media platforms. Once it goes public or is viral it can be used in other "media" platforms against us. Understand that there is a cycle to all of this. People inspire people. Art inspires people. We are a representation of Our race and Our culture. Our art is a representation of us. We are art. It matters what our babies see and hear. It becomes what they think and feel.
What is placed in their conscious and subconscious matters. Representation matters.
To all the Katelyn Marie Browns, Devin Allens, Moshoodats, Corey Washingtons, Solange Knowles', and Anulis of the world, working tirelessly on your art to express what is real, what is beautiful, what is painful, and what is inspiring, we truly appreciate you.
